Benefits of Nature-Based & Equine-Assisted Counselling

Equine-assisted therapy offers significant benefits for people with mental health challenges and neurodiverse individuals. It can support emotional regulation, build social and communication skills, and strengthen physical health, mental wellbeing, cognitive function, self-esteem, and confidence.
Research has shown its effectiveness in reducing anxiety, depression, and PTSD, as well as improving autism-related symptoms, behaviour, and social engagement in children and adolescents. These benefits have also been shown to last over time.
At Brumby Equine-Assisted Therapy, we work alongside horses and in natural environments because both offer something unique: a space where presence, awareness, and nervous system regulation can unfold without pressure or expectation.
Horses are highly responsive animals, deeply attuned to emotion, energy, and body language. As herd mammals, they communicate nonverbally and often respond to what we are not consciously aware of ourselves. Their honest, nonjudgmental feedback allows individuals to observe their own patterns and build awareness and self-compassion, especially for those who may find traditional, talk-based settings difficult.
Nature also supports regulation through rhythm, sensory input, and spaciousness. Elements like birdsong, the feel of the wind, or soft movement in the trees offer subtle cues of safety to the nervous system. Unlike confined clinical rooms, natural environments reduce social pressure and allow for a more grounded, open-ended experience.
Together, horses and nature offer more than a setting — they become part of the process. They support clients to slow down, notice, and connect with themselves and others in ways that feel safe, respectful, and meaningful. It’s not about fixing, but about allowing space for things to be noticed, felt, and understood.
